Job Title: Choral Director

Position Summary

Symons Valley United Church-a vibrant and affirming community in Northwest Calgary- is seeking a Choral Director to join  our dynamic Ministry staff team.  In collaboration with the Music Ministry Coordinator/Collaborative Pianist, Ministers and Worship Committee, this role will plan and implement the choral music program overseeing the inclusion of all choirs and a variety of instrumentalists in the worship service. The Choral Director will:

• Rehearse and direct the adult choir and provide support for the other choirs and other choral activities
• Provide music direction and choral leadership during Sunday services in collaboration with the Music Ministry Coordinator/Collaborative Pianist
• Nurture ongoing growth and development of the church’s choral music program/ministry through recruitment of new singers of all ages, and planning and developing the choral program
• Plan and implementation of choral choices that support worship themes 

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties-done in team with the Music Ministry Coordinator/Collaborative Pianist and broader ministry team- will include:

• Selecting anthems to coordinate closely with themes of upcoming services
• Preparing for and leading weekly rehearsals with the adult worship choir
• Managing the music library with the assistance of volunteers
• Collaborating with other staff members on the integration of choral music in the service
• Managing the music budget
• Recruiting singers for all choirs
• Participating in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills
• Coordinating and planning special music events such as Twelfth Night and “Beer and Carols”
• Communicating with choir members and the broader church community through email updates, quarterly newsletters, and the Annual Report submissions

 Hours of work will include:

• Weekly Commitments (~8 hours) including Thursday rehearsal; Sunday setup, service and rehearsals; and ongoing preparation, communication, and administration
• Monthly Commitments (8 – 10 hours) including worship and music planning, plus bi-weekly staff meetings
• Annual Commitments (~40 hours) including twice yearly music planning; report writing, special services (e.g., Twelfth Night, Good Friday and Christmas Eve), and attending staff retreats 

Skills Required:

• Strong communication skills
• Experience in choral direction and vocal coaching
• Specific education in choral direction is an asset
• An appreciation of United Church theology is an asset
